This grand experiment was incubating all night next to my radiator and I was hoping it would be what I wanted in the morning. And voila! it was! Hooray!
I actually made my own homemade yogurt - how cool and domestic is that???!! Plus, the Dutch side of me is going {okay, I get about 3 times the amount for a 3rd of the price of a container of yogurt in the store}. Can't beat that. It was the easiest thing I have ever made, outside of spaghetti.
It uses only 2 ingredients: milk and 2 spoonfulls of plain yogurt. Bring the milk just to a boil - stirring almost constantly; take it off the heat and let cool for about an hour (or until you can keep your finger in it for 6 seconds - I read that online); put the 2 spoonfulls of plain yogurt into a small bowl (I did this while the milk was coming to a boil so it would go to room temperature); add some of the cooled down milk to the yogurt and mix a bit until it is all the same consistency, then pour it into the large pot of milk. Cover, wrap in a big towel and put in a warm place. In the morning you will get yogurt!!!! Amazing what a bit of bacteria can do! Even more amazing is that we actually like to EAT it.
So, I just add a spoonful of jam to it and breakfast is served. Go ahead, try it!
